To the linguistic experts.
Yiddish is very much an offshoot of Medieval German. On my stay in Switzerland I
was astounded to
hear enumeration in exact same way as in Yiddish. My host spoke to his mother
and it was not Mutter but Mame and many other words. I shook my head in
amazement. My hosts were non Jews.
The wonderful thing about Yiddish was that various regions of Europe acquired in
due time their own dialect. The Litwaker was different to the Galizianer or
Basarber. Notwithstanding these difference it was a creative universal
instrument bringing about a rich literary treasure. Writers, artist and theatre.
I the late 30Th I was enthralled by the play of "The two Kuni Lemels" and "Tevie
the Milechiger" during the Soviet period I saw the play" The Partisan" in
Yiddish.after that Yiddish became a lingua non grata. The only Yiddish the
Soviets wanted was in Birobijan

Subject: [Cz-L] Yiddish
Yiddish is not German, and it differs according to region it was used. My wife
is from Lithuania, very deep routed in the Yiddish culture and she had problems
to communicate with my Bessarabian family branch who were also very deep routed
in the Yiddish culture.
