Hello Vasile,
Thank you for for sending us the URL for this map.
Do you know in what year this map was published? I was surprised to find
that on this map, the street on which I was born and lived till 1945, is
called "Strada Fierarului". In German, it was called Schmiedtgasse and
fierarul is the Romanian word for the German Schmiedt, but I always thought
that the Romanian name was Str. Cronicarul Neculce (or Neculcea).
Another street on this map is called str. Zaloziecki, but on the 1941 map
it is called str. Besarabiei. By the way, I think that currently, this
street is again called Zalozietcki, after Dr. Zalozietcki, the head of the
Ruthenian party in the interwar period.
This map also does not extend as far south as the city extended in 1940, is
this simply because the map is cut off at this point? Or could this map be
from the period immediately after WW1 and before the Romanization of
Czernowitz had been completed and the city expanded to the south.
Mimi
