Czernowitzers...

May I draw your attention to a superb new map of the Czernowitz Ghetto?
It comes from Leo Spitzer and Marianne Hirsch.

---
In Leo's own words:
"...We are sending you a high resolution Czernowitz ghetto map
indicating the streets that were included in the ghetto in its first
configuration when it was created on October 11, 1941. It is based on
official Romanian information published in Cernăuți in the Romanian
language newspaper “Bucovina” on Saturday, October 11, 1941, the day the
ghetto was officially established. The 1941 source map used here was
published by the German military in 1941 using a Romanian base map
(which explains the Romanian street names used in conjunction with
German language identification of some sites [i.e. “Juden Friedhof’;
“Schlachthhof”; “Güterbanhof” etc.]). As you well know, that map, in
high resolution, is available on the Czernowitz-ehpes web site.
Curiously, the Judengasse (Evreiască) was not included in this official
listing of ghetto streets. A subsequent addition to the ghetto was the
Wojnarowiczgasse (Oltenei).
A schematic version of this map can be found on p. 126 in our book,
"Ghosts of Home: The Afterlife of Czernowitz in Jewish
memory" (http://www.ghostsofhome.com/blog/)
[...]
Best regards,
Leo Spitzer & Marianne Hirsch

The map is accessible from the Ehpes Home Page:
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com  -> Menu -> Maps -> Item #16
I have higher resolution version of the posted map that I could email to
you if you need it.
I'm sure you will join me in thanking Leo and Marianne for this!
Best,
jerome
