I remember it was the 11 of October Simchas Torah we were about to get up and
prepare to go to the Schotzer Rebbe Shull in the Steingasse. When there was a
hammering at the door and shouts to pack and get out into the street. There was
pandemonium as it happen so sudden and chaotic. Nobody knew what is happening.
As a child I did not grasp the seriousnes as panic set in seeing the worry and
the chaotic goings on. When we got outside we noticed horse drawn carts almost
ordered to take people to the Jewish qarter where the initial Getho was created.
Meantime thiefs took advantage to steal and rob what they could. Where are we
going? We are going to be resettled somewhere. Most were in a daze, it was a
nightmare seing your friends and neighbours struggling in this black day.
We eventually made it into the Jewish quarter. I cold not remember where we were
quartered, except the house was full and nobody knew what happened. I know only
after a few day my brother Leo contracted meninggits and was taken outsi the
Getho to the Hospital. My father
seem to have friends among his clents who managed to get us a permit to leave
the Getho to go back home.
I remember Stefanigasse was boarded up at the Mehlplatz.

I was little and do not remember if the ghetto was was closed off or not.
What I do remember is that on the Ghetto day , Oct 11 , they built
wooden road blocks. My house was Russischegasse 46 , the last house
outside the Ghetto , so I remember the big gate they built 4-5 meters high.
Building such a wall and leaving the rest open wide ?
Anything was possible in 1941 in Czernowitz.

Dear folks; I attach a pdf of General Calotescu's (Governor of the Bukowina)
"Announcement" concerning the establishment of the ghetto. As you will note,
the document contains the names of streets to be included in the ghetto. If one
tracks these streets on the high res 1941 Romanian city map that is posted on
our website, you will note that the parameter of the ghetto is not l closed off.
Best, Leo
