Dear All,
In recent weeks, there has been much debate within this list about various
aspects of the persecution of Jews in Czernowitz during WW2.
My own memories of the events, or of the events as described to me by my
parents, do not always agree with what I find in published books.
Since there are many members of this list who still remember those events
and also many who have researched the subject, I would like to open a
discussion on this topic in the hope that we can come to some consensus.
I think that we all agree that the Czernowitz ghetto was established on Oct.
11th 1941. My parents told me that we were in the ghetto until it officially
closed nine 9 weeks later. If this is correct, it means that the ghetto was
closed on Dec. 13th 1941. Even if it was not exactly nine weeks, only
approximately so, it would have closed in mid December.
Is this what any of you remember or read?
In "The Holocaust in Romania", Radu Ioanid write on page 142:
"It is indicative of the struggle that only those holding special permits
enjoyed the right to work and that these numbered only one thousand out of
the fifteen thousand residing in the ghetto as of 1943 - 1944."
He bases this assertion on the "Cartea Neagra" by M. Carp.
As far as I have always thought, the ghetto certainly did not exist anymore
in 1943 and 1944.
Quite some time ago, I had submitted to Jerome copies of various documents
pertaining to that period, which had been retained by my father. These
documents were displayed on the Ehpes website. They were still there
yesterday, but I cannot find them today. I assume that Jerome is in the
middle of reorganizing the website and that is why they are temporarily not
available.
When I submitted those documents, I also translated them from Romanian into
English and gave a brief explanation about each. I now think that both my
translations as well as the explanations are occasionally wrong.
When they are back on the website, I hope that those who still know Romanian
well, will look at them and let me know, whether my translations are
correct.
Mimi
