Mr Lasky,
I don't have much information regarding the jewish theathre in Czernowitz,
but whatever I know, I will tell you:
There was a small theatre in the jewish quarter, quite old and neglected,
and the people used to call it "The Kneppl Theatre" which means that if one
did not have any money to pay for a ticket, one just paid with a button and
it was all right.
Of course this is legend and nothing else.
I was very often taken along by my parents and aunts to the theatre and the
names of the actors which I remember are Gisia Schwarz and Shimale
Leibowitz, both quite talented with a lot of jewish soul.
After a while and i don't know on whose initiative, it was decided to move
the jewish performances to the former Scala movie house, which was more
modern and more suitable for Goldfaden plays. A talented actress which I
remember was named Sevilla Pastor, a comedian named Rintzler, his daughter
being the orchestra chief and a violonist named Henny Rintzler.
This was the time of shows like "Two Kuni Leml", the "Kishefmacherte", and a
wonderful revue called "Lachen is gesund"/
A beautiful performance I remember was also the "Kreuzer Sonata" with
Sevilla Pastor in the lead.
Even as a young child I was addicted to the jewish theatre and knew most of
the songs which I played on the piano. By ear.
This is actually all that I can contribute.
Lucca
