Hi Stephen
My mother who is now 92 is also a survivor of Bershad, and I have written
about my roots trip to there with my family. You'll find my account,
together with a photograph of the memorial stone my family erected, on the
Ehpes site in the "list members' stories, documents and trip reports"
section.
We decided to do this as a family since there was no official
acknowledgement there of the deaths, suffering and inhumanity of Bershad.
Since most of my family lives in Israel, the words on the memorial stone are
in Hebrew, but those words refer to it as a memorial to all the victims of
the Shoah there.
As we were there in 2002, I'm not sure whether since then a more fitting
formal acknowledgement has been established re the role of Bershad in the
history of the Shoah and Bukovina.
Please feel free to contact me off-list if I can help with any information
about our trip or the memorial.

My mother unfortunately suffered the horrors of this camp, Bershad to be
exact, where she lost her entire family. She is now 88 and still suffering.
Has a memorial ever been erected specifically to memorialize those who died
in Transistria ?
