Czernowitzers and military buffs:

I have uploaded a map which I find especially exciting in it's
historical significance and detail. The original came from mappywig.org
via Vasile Craciunescu -- it was over 40MB and almost impossible to
handle. The Map Department at Ehpes beat it into submission and it's now
on the site, still with a large file size of 5MB (but 8x smaller than
the original). So it will take a while to download. The map is a
composite of three maps of parts of Russian Poland, and one part of
Romania -- rather seamlessly knitted together by meticulous
cartographers.

Peter Elbau interpreted the map for us and says:

"The 3 polish maps (1:100.000) are probably from 1920- with updates to
1940. The "Czernowitz" map (1:75.000 reduced to 1:100.000) is the k.k.
military-map with appropriate updates. All maps are based of course on
the old Austrian map (1:75.000 with use of the Ferro-Meridian).

This map was certainly used for military and organizational purposes by
the Nazi troops during the invasion of Russia (Unternehmen Barbarossa)
and therefore also the invasion of Czernowitz."

You can navigate to the map from the Menu on the Ehpes home page:
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com -> Maps -> the last item on the splash page
(#17).

Best,
