I left Czernowitz with my parents in 1946. All our belongings were placed on
a cart drawn by a single tired horse. My parents had warned me to leave my
diary at home, written in German and containing many descriptions of life
under communism. I did not listen to them and, together with my favorite
doll and favorite book (the Tom Sawyer) I put it into my backpack.
When we arrived at the border in Seret we were asked to take apart all we
had with us. When I took out my diary, my parents grew pale with fright. The
soldier looked at it, turned a few pages, and finally rubber stamped it.
A long time this diary was exhibited to all and sundry as a curiosity, a
complete description of communist misery in Czernowitz, with a Russian
rubber stamp on it.
