1. Bon Voyage, Jerome!
2. Ina's question has been on my mind often. Having left Cz in the spring of
'39, I had no idea about what took place during the war years and the post war
years. Hans Noe, a schoolmate from Scoala Elite and our doctor's son, came out
to New York and whenever I asked him, he would change the subject. Once he
responded dreamily recalling a time when the Germans were fleeing through Cz
with the Russians on their heels. He recalled that the town's streets filled
with abandoned army vehicles and motorcycles when they ran out of gas and the
Germans continued to flee on foot.
I've said to myself a good number of times that I wouldn't have survived the war
because I'm a fighter. I've never been able to take orders. I would have found
and joined some resistance movement by 1940 when I turned 13 and most of the
resistance fighters ended up dead. Had we got to Palestine instead of Canada, I
would probably have joined the Stern Gang. I have often wondered about
resistance movements in Bukovina. Does anyone have any information? Is there
anything in print anywhere on this subject?
The brother of my cousin Turi Gutmann's wife Raya, now in Herzliyah, fought in
the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and survived. He wrote an excellent book on his
experiences: "Memoirs of a Warsaw Ghetto Fighter - by Kazi (Simha Rotem) I've
never found anything like this on Czernowitz or Bukovina. Has anyone any clues?
In retrospect, the Communist years in Romania functioned as retribution to the
Romanian Fascists who murdered Romanian Jews. Of course, as always in such
cases, many innocents get to suffer, too.
All the best,
Andy
