Hardy is right that we did not know the street names in Romanian.
I did not even know the name in Romanian, of the street on which
I lived. But I did get lost in Czernowitz, twice. Both times on
the Rusische Gasse; once in 1945 and once in 2010. Both times I had
to ask passers-by for directions. Last time I asked in English and
did get an answer in English, also a handdrawn map.
Die Rusische Gasse became strada Romana and now is back to being
Ruska Ulitza.
