Hardy, you hit the nail on the head when you used the word "humanists." The
Hitlers of the world were always a tiny minority; those who promote hate and
killing. Their followers were the mentally unstable and the amoral opportunists,
again only a percentage of the population. The majority in any group were always
decent people who lacked conviction and courage and did nothing. They stood by.
And then there is that tiniest minority of humanists, heroic people who cannot
stand by when the tide goes wrong. Those are the Popovicis and the twenty two
thousand plus Righteous Among the Nations identified and honored by Yad Vashem.
Their existence and their stories is the most encouraging thing we have in this
world because without people of that kind of caliber we'd have no civilization.
