Dear All,
--Celan's death tango, announced by the speaker Dov Friedman from
Buenos-Aires, was not sung, but another sad poem in Spanish, identical
with the text on the video. I think the singer too, is South-American. I
could not find any other link. Maybe someone can help.
---As to Jachet /Jeaneth Meerbaum-as far as I know, all Meerbaums from
Czernowitz were related, my paternal grand-father Abraham
Meerbaum, had a sister or half-sister called by everybody Jenny. She
emigrated to Chile, then lived in Israel and finally in Canada. Maybe it
is her. She is not alive any more, but her son lives in Canada.
Alternatively, Selma Meerbaum's father, who was a second-degree cousin
of my grand-father, had a brother Joseph who after the war emigrated to
Israel and in his late years, became a naive painter. I would be more
than happy to discover a new relative. Are we related somehow? Does
anyone in your family remember? My grand-father's parents, the
Meerbaums, came originally from Galicia.
-- Florence's video about Czernowitz is another interesting addition to
the many contributions coming from all over which complete the
picture of Czernowitz, past and present. Like a kind of time-machine
brought a lively picture of the city in 1940- Of course, there had been
no unanimous vote for the Romanian annexation. I suppose quite a few
people were unhappy. Yet, the propaganda machine had to say this.
--And finally, Svit Ukraine is doing a great job, and so is Christian
Hermann! Thank you Christian, again.
--One more - of course, the yellow star was introduced when the Romanian
army together with their allies, the German army, occupied the city, and
it was certainly the Germans who insisted on it. Easier to identify. My
mother still kept hers in Bucharest, I remember it.
