Update

Czernowitzers and Art Lovers...

I frankly acknowledge, that I'm honored and grateful at the same time, that
Stanford University Professor Emeritus John Felstiner, THE leading expert
worldwide for Paul Celan researches, visited the Solo Exhibition "Schwarze
Milch/Black Milk" and wrote to me:

"Thanks for your work here, Edgar! On the Czernowitz show I was alerted to,
I tried to answer 'Varske''s comment that my translation is incomplete. ...
It may seem incomplete, but actually it's not, it's deliberate. All the
German original (except "Deutschland") is translated at first. Then
gradually, Celan's key phrases metamorphose back into his own voice. (See my
chapter on this poem in 'Paul Celan: Poet, Survivor, Jew.')"

I wish, I could appreciate John Felstiner's translation of "Todesfuge" to
the full extent, but as a non-native speaker I cannot. But - beyond any
doubt - John Felstiner's authority on poetry is breathtaking, as we learn
from his faculty profile:

http://english.stanford.edu/bio.php?name_id=49

"...after teaching at the Hebrew University in Israel (1974-75), he began
studying the literature, art, photography, and music that emerged from the
European Jewish catastrophe. His book on the German-speaking Jewish poet,
Paul Celan: Poet, Survivor, Jew (1995), was a Finalist for the National Book
Critics Circle award and the MLA's James Russell Lowell prize, and won the
Truman Capote Prize for Literary Criticism."

John, I published your comment at

I'm going to read your chapter on 'Deathfugue' in 'Paul Celan: Poet,
Survivor, Jew.'. In addition I'd like to introduce our "Ehpes Discussion
Group" to you:
