Even in the "Wohnkasernen" the dwelling barracks there were classes.
The front apartments facing the streets had more rooms and had
balconies facing the streets. Also direct access.
The flanks had gangways and had 2- room apartments.
In our house the front apartments were held by an English language
professor
a doctor and a merchant.
The flanks were emloyees , laborers , tradesmen .
The rear side were widows , pensioners or rented out.
These houses usually had street grocery stores connected to
flats with entry by the court.
It was entertaing living in one of these houses : never a dull moment.

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] A tale of two streets
I wrote my previous message before reading Iosif Vaisman's message,
but now I would like to say one more thing about the apartment buildings
in Czernowitz.
Each apartment building had a ground floor, called "Parterre" and
considered
reasonable to live in. Erster Stock (what we now would call second
floor),
was a very desirable location. The Zweiter Stock was still desirable,
but the Dritter Stock was not and worse of all were the Keller Wohnung,
down in the basement. That is how in the same building could live
both the rich and the poor.
