Dear Fred,
Thank you for your kind letter. But it was not I who initiated the
setting up
of a memorial to the victims of the ghetto. In fact, I do not know
who initiated
the idea and had the temporary memorial erected at the Turkish square,
nor who brought it before the Chernivtsi city council.
From my phone conversation today with Dr. Bursuk, I understand only
that the inscription has as yet not been decided upon and that the input
of the Czernowitz-List will be considered.
Fred,
I think that you misunderstood some of the messages to this list about
the subject of the murders of Jewish people in and around Czernowitz,
during the summer of 1941. No one has denied that in many villages and
small towns in the vicinity of Czernowitz, Jewish people were murdered
by their Romanian and Ukrainian neighbors.
In Czernowitz itself and in many nearby villages and small towns,
during the summer of 1941, about 2000 Jewish people were murdered
by German and Romanian troops.
For those who do not know German: The reference to "Schlarafenland" in
Fred's message means the equivalent of the English "Rock candy
mountain".
We currently do not have enough information about the proposed memorial.
We do not know who initiated the idea, whether it was supposed to be
only a memorial to those forced to stay in the Ghetto, or also to those,
who were deported to Transnistria, those who died in Transnistria and
on the way there, those who were murdered in Czernowitz, and/or those
who were murdered in one way or another during the summer of 1941.
We do not know exactly what the Chernivtsi city council agreed to,
as far as the size, languages and content of the inscription.
I suggest we wait until we know all the facts, before we decide whether
to get involved and what we would like the inscription to say.
Still, I like Fred's idea of having the inscription consist of the
prayer
"El maleh Rachamim" in many languages.
I apologize for having initiated this discussion before knowing all
the facts.
As to the Czernowitz Ghetto, it seems that I did not know all the facts.
It was my impression that all Jews residing in Czernowitz were ordered
on the pain of death, to move to the area designated as the ghetto,
by the evening of Oct. 11th 1941.
According to "The Holocaust in Romania", by Dr. Radu Ioanid, p. 130,
49 497 Jewish people were confined to the ghetto in Czernowitz.
Dr. Ioanid bases this number on the book "Cartea Neagra" by M. Carp.
From what my parents told me, we were in the ghetto for nine (9) weeks,
till the ghetto was dissolved. This would mean that the ghetto was
dissolved
on or about Dec. 13th 1941.
When we left the ghetto, we could not return to our home, because it
had been
taken over by a Romanian architect by the name of Grecu and his family.
I believe that for some time we stayed with the Romanian, who now owned
the factory which had belonged to my grandparents. We definitely stayed
in the apartment of this man, till it was announced that Romanians
hiding Jews
would be shot, but I do not know the date when we moved in with him, nor
when we moved out at an hour's notice. We were given one night's
shelter,
by a Jewish family who lived in the same apartment building. They
apparently,
did have permits to stay, but they too, could have been shot for
hiding us.
