There must be some truth to it - because it seems to be a universal concept.
In Mexico where I used to live one talks about "mal de ojo" and there exist
protective amulets and little rituals to avoid or cure it...and in modern
USA people talk about being given the "evil eye." I remember from my
childhood my omama and even my mutti doing little rituals to fend off bad
luck. I think that one had to do with throwing salt over ones shoulder - and
another, if one accidently put a garment on inside out (which could cause
self inflicted bad luck) one had to take it off immediately and step on it
three times before putting it on again....
