Oh, how one memory prods another! I must have been five or six when my parents took me to Wizenka to enroll me in the camp. Dr. Muniu Hacken beeing a close friend of my uncle, Dr Salo Koffler. Under no circumstances would I stay there.
I must have been too much of a burden for my mother, she being pregnant so my uncle, not having any children of his own, invited me to stay with him and my aunt. I guess I was a handful, for the Ukrainian maid said, "either she goes or I do". Guess who went?

As a child I spent every summer vacation - about 3 weeks - with my mother in Vijenca. We stayed at the house "Hasenfratz" the most well-known resort there. It was a big house, a huge garden, and the young Mr. Hasenfratz used to grill freshly caught trout, in front of the house. I can still remember the wonderfully enticing smell and how we all stood around him with plates waiting to be served.
There were the most wonderful vacations. There was that small river in which we bathed, and wonderful scenery green and flourishing wherever we looked.
The children's colony which was world famous, was managed by Dr Muniu Hacken (a pediatrician) and his very chamring and talented wife, Vera, who was a writer. Both of them very close friends of my family. I was invited to join them for a week or two at that house, but I was still at the age when I wouldn't leave my parents.
During my last visit to the Bucovina, we passed Vijenca while in the bus, but i did not recognize anything, It was still lush and green and beautiful like most places in the Bucovina. And many years had passed. Paradise lost.
