I also remember that another way to overcome mysterious
happenings was pouring bees wax. In the resulting shapes the lady who did this
would give an explanation I vaguely remember her as Mrs Rofe from the Steingasse
she was also a "Hebamme"' a midwife. Oh! for superstition.

Subject: [Cz-L] superstitions

I can't resist - have to jump into this discussion now.  I believe that a lot of
these superstitions are common to all eastern European Jews.

My grandmother Esther Miller Kastner, born in Philadelphia (of a Litvak father
and a Bessarabian mother) in 1894, (married to my Kastner grandfather from
Radautz) was very superstitious, always talking about 'kein ayin hora". And even
today, I sometimes find myself saying “I don’t want to give it a nehora”.

She never gave her wonderfully accomplished daughter Anita a compliment, with
the excuse that ‘it would bring her back luck’.

And when we were sick, she told us to wrap a red flannel scarf around our
throats – it had to be red and flannel.
