I am sorry, but does anybody realise that the reason we left before, after, during the WWII or those of us who represented the "younger" post-war Czernowitzer was not because we did not love our homes, books, museums or parks, but because after what happened to you and what we witnessed as we grow up and matured those thing mattered less than true freedom and safety? The fact that our ancestors served in the Kaiser's Army and were loyal and respectful citizens did not save them from the camps.
When I was a teen in Czernowitz 50% percent of the population were Jewish. How many of them are still there? Most of them left for Israel and US and those who stayed are elderly, some are more assimilated than the others. I don't want to question their reasons for staying. But if you are talking about the "real" Czernowitzer Jews it's us. And just like we contributed to the culture, arts and science in Czernowitz we continued to contribute in places we moved to.
When I travel in Europe I enjoy looking at buildings and parks that remind me of Czernowitz, because of the wonderful memories of my childhood, but would I like my grandchildren to grow up there today?
Camelots don't last forever.
