Mimi... The sheets presented on the website can't be directly sorted (to
my knowledge). So we need to convert the 'table' data back to
'spreadsheet form'. Try this:
1. Go to the address book you want to sort;
2. Type ^a (hold down the control key, while typing an 'a'). This will
select the entire table;
3. With your mouse, right click anywhere on the data and select 'copy'.
The table data is now on your clipboard.
4. Bring up Microsoft Excel (blank spread sheet);
5. select the first box (A1)
6. right click your mouse and select paste
7. you have now copied the 'table' presented on the website back to an
excel spreadsheet.
8. use the spreadsheet's sort function to sort on the address column in
alphabetical order.
These are large files and you must be patient.
If this doesn't seem like your cup of tea; you can ask Edgar to sort the
original file(s) of interest by Address and send you the spreadsheet.
I may be able to find the original spreadsheet(s) that Edgar sent me so
you can start at #8 and save some sweat.
Maybe someone else has a better idea?
Best,
jerome
[Other Moderator's Note: Yeah, I have a better idea! Go directly to Edgar's blog
<http://czernowitz.blogspot.com>. Scroll down until you see the directory that interests you, e.g.
"1936: Inhabitants of Czernowitz (33,094 datasets)"
Click on that listing and the Excel Sheet will download directly to your hard drive. Thank to Edgar, these
Spreadsheets are available to all.
