Dear friends...
Berti is completely right, the Czernowitz Address Books were not (and are not) the equivalent to a population census, showing the heads of households. In addition, the address books reflect the records of the Czernowitz registration office, managed during the interwar period by Romanian authorities and everyone, who knows Romanian administration...
However, many people discovered their ancestors in those address books and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington included these data to their website. For a regular search for a name, it's the most convenient method to address to the Ehpes Databases section. As mentioned by Bruce, for an advanced research, as intended by Mimi, please proceed as follows:
1. Go to my Czernowitz Blog at http://czernowitz.blogspot.com/.
2. Download the respective Excel file(s) for the year(s) 1898, 1909, 1914, 1927, 1936.
3. Depending on the Excel version, you are using, you'll find in the Excel menu "Data" and "Extras".
4. Look for "Filter" or "Autofilter" and confirm this function.
5. Each column will show now a small arrow. Clicking on this arrow, you'll get a vast number of sort keys.
6. Save sorted listings under new file names, so you'll be able to redo your sort process by using different criteria.
Good "hunting" for names, addresses, occupations, neighbours, etc.! For additional questions please don't hesitate to contact us!
