Czerniwtizers,
I wanted to share a story that shows the power and importance of this list.
Some months ago I wrote an email about the process I went through to
gain access to documents about my grandfather's arrest and ultimate
deportation.
Ina Lancman, contacted me and asked if I could call her to discuss the
details because she has been searching for records about her father
for a very long time. I did in fact call and we had a lengthy
conversation about how I obtained the documents and connected Ina with
Vadim Alscan of the National Holocaust Museum who was an invaluable
adviser and friend to me throughout my journey to discover what
happened to my grandfather.
After our conversation we both asked questions about our families. Ina
mentioned that her daughter lived in Roslyn, NY and she had a
9-year-old grandson. I mentioned that my niece lived in Roslyn as well
and that my great nephew was about the same age and wouldn't it be
funny if they knew each other.
Well not only do the kids know each other but they are good friends
and are going to sleep away camp together! Incredible!
Then, a couple of days ago Ina called to tell me that Vadim confirmed
for her that her father's records are indeed in Czernowtiz and now
Zoya Danilovich who help me beyond my imagination will help Ina obtain
what she needs from the archives.
I thank all of you for making this life line available to me and so
many others. There is no doubt that the EPHES site is a unique
experience that I don't think exists for generations of any other town
in Eastern Europe.
In the words of my mother, "everywhere I go, there's always someone
who knows someone from Czernowitz!"
Happy Memorial Day and good luck to Ina in her endeavors.
Ilana
