In Czernowitz the Ukrainian street urchins knew all the Polish swear-
words.
Currently in Chernivtsi, opposite the hotel Magnat Lux there is an
exercise place,
the name of which includes the English word "Curve". I remarked about
it to
my Ukrainian friends and they knew the meaning of the word, but said
it was Polish, not Ukrainian.
At the time Hardy and I lived in Czernowitz, the local Ukrainians
spoke Ruthenian,
which is a Ukrainian dialect heavily influenced by Polish.
For instance; for "good day", we said Zjin Dobre, in Ukrainian they
sat Dobre Den.
