Yes, we read about Ruebezahl and also about Till Eulenspiegel
and we read the grim tales of the Brothers Grimm which gave us
nightmares,
and the stories of Hans Christian Andersen.
We were also told the Yiddish versions of some of these stories and
in these,
the happy ending would be that all the children were saved, bathed
and got
"Kasha mit milech".
"Max und Moritz" encouraged us to be naughty and the stories of
Shalom Aleichem -
to take life with a pinch of salt.
We sang "Hänschen Klein", "Fuchs du hast die Gans gestohlen" and
"Ein Männlein steht im Walde ganz still und stum" and fell asleep to
the singing of " or " Rozsinkes mit Mandlen".
Nostalgia, nostalgia.
