Subject: [Cz-L] Ruebezahl

Ruebezahl comes to Czernowitz.

In the Riesengebuerge, on the border between Silesia and Poland
lived a legendary mountain spirit named Ruebezahl.
This region is not Germany now but in old times it was populated by
  germans.
The legend belongs to German folklore irrespective of boundaries.
He was a benevolent giant but when in a rage could be dangerous .
Got his name from a story of a princess he kept in bondage
and wanted to mary but she put one condition on her consent , he
must count the turnips in the field she grew.
Ruebezahl started counting but as he finished he was not sure of the
count
so started all over , got a different count and repeated once more.
This is how he got his nickname : Turnip counter - Ruebezahl.

Every boy or girl in Czernowitz knew him too well.
After the piano lessons they would all read Ruebezahl.
      And dream of the Riesengebirge.
