When I arrived in Israel and still did not know any Hebrew but wanted to
earn money, I accepted a job in a completely German branch of the Japhet
bank as their German/English correspondent.
This contrary to my statement: "In a bank? Over my dead body!" And until now
I still don't know the difference between a share and a debenture.
But I wrote their letters
Mrs. Manasse, the executive secretary 55 years or so, said to me:
"Lucca you know 99 1/2% German!"
"And what about that half percent?"
"That's...that's Czernowitzerisch!

Since weeks I had some kind of volatile internet which was coming and going
and lately staying away completely. If I owe replies to anybody, it may take
time.

Just a bit more about Czernowitzer Deutsch. When I eventually got to
Australia in order to get something called a "Commonwealth Scholarship"
which helped to pay the fees one had to do exams called "The Leaving
Certificate". One of the subjects I sat was German...all learned in
Czernowitz.....and I got a top" Honours" pass. And it helped to get me into
Med School!! Cornel
