Thank you very much for your mail. No, Carol II didn't visit Czernowitz before, at least not as a reigning King. Between 1926 and 1930 he lived in Paris in exile due to his different love affaires and the relationship to his (Jewish) mistress (and later his wife) Elena Lupescu, better known as Magda Lupescu. The 25.05.1933 edition of "Der Tag", page 4, available at

reports on Carol's II return to Romania and regency proclamation in 1930, without mentioning with one single word his liaison to Magda Lupescu (!). It was not Carol II, but his father Ferdinand I, who visited in the year 1924 Czernowitz.
