Charles, Cornel, Hardy and members of the Cz-List

We should not necessarily be annoyed that no one consulted us about
the memorial to the Jews of Czernowitz who were imprisoned in the ghetto.
When we decided on a memorial plaque to Popovici, we did not consult
the Jews currently living in Chernivtsi, nor Czernowitz Jews who are not
members of this list.

I was told that the current memorial was put up on the initiative of Rabbi
Kofmanski and Cornel heard the same, so it is plausible that this is so.
We could write to Rabbi Kofmanski and inquire. I am not on good terms
with him, but if someone else is, please phone or write him and ascertain
the facts.

On the other hand, what do we really want?
I personally do not care whether anyone commemorates MY having been
in the ghetto. Do I want to commemorate that the Romanian government in 1941
locked us up in a small part of town, so that it would be easy to deport us
and so that others could steal our belongings, left in our homes? YES
Is putting up a memorial stone in a central place in Chernivtsi, the best
way to do this? NO. Let them teach children, in Romania, Ukraine, the US and
all European countries, what fascist governments did.

Would I like a memorial to be errected in Chernivtsi, to the Jews of
Czernowitz, who were deprived of all human rights, tortured and killed in
Czernowitz, vicinity and in Transnistria?
YES, BUT ONLY UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS.
I would like the inscription to be quite explicit, including facts and
numbers. I would like it to be in a public place in Chernivtsi, but do not
insist on a particular place. I am willing to contribute financially to such
a project, but am NOT willing to fight the Chernivtsi city council to have
such a memorial put up. If the current local inhabitants do not want it,
there is no point in having it there.

Mimi
