Czernowitzers...

Inspired by Christian's excellent Czernowitz presentation and the correspondance, that we additionaly conducted on this subject, I researched the statistical records for Romania during the interwar period and I'm pleased to present to you the Czernowitz District Censuses for the years 1930 and 1941 at:

http://czernowitz.blogspot.com/2011/07/czernowitz-district-census-for-years.html

You are invited to download the 1930 census record (Romanian/French) as a pdf file and to view the figures from the 1941 census record, but please note:

- The 1930 census covers the ethnic background, the native language and the religious affiliation of the population.
- In the 1930 census the city of Czernowitz is referred to as "Municipiul Cernauti".
- In 1930 the Jewish share of the population in the city of Czernowitz was 37,90 %, but just 17,10 % in the district.
- The figures for 1941 are considering the repatriation of the Germans, etc., but not the deportations of the Jews to Transnistria.

Many further comments and conclusions could be made on this subject and the accuracy of the figures recorded by the Romanian authorities, esp. those from the year 1941, is questionable, but however the data are interesting and a basis for discussion.

Please note, that Christian's above mentioned Czernowitz presentation is still available at:

Shabbat Shalom and/or an amazing weekend to all of you!
