Because of the cold windows were double.
The gap had different uses:
1. To make Sauermilch. You put cups of fresh milk ,not pasteurized,
on the gap and in a day or so a layer of cream formed and the
milk was deliciously sour .
2. In case of thunderstorms there you put cups of water to avert
lightning.
3. On days of frost ice flowers formed on the outer panes.
On extreme cold - on the inner panes too.
It could be very cold in Czernowitz...
