In addition to Mimi's excellent advise, please try to find an unconventional and personal approach to the archivists, beyond any bureaucratic procedures. The people over there are generally very friendly and they will interprete the existing regulations in accordance to your approach. In all former Soviet Union states, things are still not finally settled and there is an official and a completely different real interpretation of law and regulations.
So, assisted by the translator, better focus yourself on interaction with the archivists, than bringing into question formal details.
