I wonder a bit what my maternal grandfather, Markus Spiegel, would have tho=
ught about the wearing of the star, on reflection, if he could have read th=
is online conversation. He died over 60 years ago. My late mother, Pearl Sp=
iegel Fichman, was always moved when she looked at a picture we had of her =
father wearing the star. He looked sad in the image and he was not wearing =
a hat - very uncharacteristic for him - he was a very observent religious J=
ew. I think my mother thought that her father felt demeaned because of bein=
g forcibly marked in this way. The sadness of his eyes in the portrait reso=
nated with her as well as with me around that projection of his frame of mi=
nd.=20
