Dear Abraham, Josif and Lilian,
Could this building have housed different schools at different times?
On Ehpes there is a photograph of the graduating class of 1938 of the Liceum
"Marele Voevod Mihai" which shows Paul Anczel (Paul Celan) as one of
the students. Lilian's father, A Madfes and my mother's cousin A. Wiznitzer
were also in this class, which incidentally, was all male.
Judging both by the names of the students and by the fact that two out
of three of the teachers of religion are dressed as priests, I conclude;
that while most of the students in this class were Jewish, this was not a
Jewish school, at least not in 1938. Latin, Greek and German were taught,
but Hebrew - was not.
Does anyone have an explanation why it is thought that this building housed
a Jewish school?
Mimi
