The name "Czernowitz" has a slavic origin, composed by "czern(o)" = black and "witz", a typical slavic suffix for town or family names (for example Kattowitz, Gleiwitz, etc.). So, "Czernowitz" means most probably "black city". Why black? Well, "black" could allude to the black color of the city wall or alternatively to the black color of the fertile groud in that area!
Warmest wishes and Shana Tova!
