Czernowitz the origin of the name :
I once encountered a different interpretation of a professor of languages
 who elaborated like this :
Czern in not from the obvious slav black but much earlier language
   meaning tree , log.
Vitz was the old name of the Prut as called by the locals.
And therefore Chern - na - Vitz means Logs on the Prut.
To me it makes as much sense as Blackpool.
The first settlement was the historic Czern on the left bank of the
Vitz.

Iris...

The name "Czernowitz" has a slavic origin, composed by "czern(o)" = black
and "witz", a typical slavic suffix for town or family names (for example
Kattowitz, Gleiwitz, etc.). So, "Czernowitz" means most probably "black
city". Why black? Well, "black" could allude to the black color of the city
wall or alternatively to the black color of the fertile groud in that area!

Warmest wishes and Shana Tova!
