Another bit of history that I have no doubt affected Czernowitz. Karl was
also King of Hungary...and when the Hungarians tried to bring him back in
the early 20s the British and French threatened to send gunboats up the
Danube....and the memory of that did not make the Allies popular in 1939.

Karl Franz Joseph Ludwig Hubert Georg Otto Marie von Habsburg-Lothringen,
  He was the last emperror of the Habsburg - Loraine house .
   The Habsburgs had many more houses.
   Long name , short rule ( 2 years), short life (35 years.)

   Here he inspects his troops on the Ringplatz in 1917.
    In WW1 the Habsburgs won all the battles but lost the war.
    Soon the Empire disintegrated.
     Austria became a republic , Karl went into exile.
      Died aged 35 in Madeira exile , banned from Austria because
     he refused to resign his rule.
