Towns dont stand for anything - they are made of stone and wood.
People stand or dont stand .
The Rumanians stood for discriminating the Jews.
From the beginning in 1918 ,before the right wingers came to power.
Yiddish speaking in the open was forbidden and punishable.
      Civil service jobs were denied.
       Universities were restricted.
        Matura passing was restricted.
         Ownership of business was denied.
All this from 1918 before the reactionaries came to power.
This is the Czernowitz that stood for peaceful coexistence ?
Edi Wagner was murdered by the Rumanian Siguranta ?
But the Siguranta was part of Czernowitz not of Bombay.
Of Czernowitz who stood for all the things so beautiful ?
The other minorities I dont know what they stood for
but Byelohus , my ruthenian neighbor stood for beating me up
             every other day.
This is what he stood for,

Mimi writes:

Czernowitz stood for decent behavior, peaceful coexistence
of the various ethnic and religious minorities, love of education
and culture. Prior to WW2, the dislikes or prejudices which
some people felt, were generally kept in check.
No pogroms or blood libels in Czernowitz.

Chief Rabbi Igel and Metropolit Hackman were friends.
So was chief Rabbi Mark and Metropolit Vladimir de Repta
When there was a plebiscite in 1918 or 1919 to decide whether
Bukovina should be annexed by Romania, the Jewish population
voted against it with the Ukrainian population.
The head of the Ruthenian party, Dr. Zaloziecki was highly regarded
by the Jewish community.
According to Charles Rosner:
> The Edi Wagner ensemble consisted of 100 young people
> from all nationalities (Jews, Germans, Ukrainians, Romanians, etc)
