Hi Mimi,
Alexianu became antisemite through his job...In the 1936 bacaulareat session
in July, Lotte(Mariannes mother) and me had him for the prasident of the
exam.commission.I believe, we were more than 50 jewish girls, and all passed
the exam, I had a problem because the prof.for geography, a renown
antisemith, gave me a 3, telling you never will pass the bac...The other
notes were very good.. I came criyng home, we had a neighbour, she went to a
relative of Alexianu, explained what happaned and Alexianu changed the 3 in
4, so thanks him I passed the bac...
Hedwig

If you read the article by Alexander Dallin about Gheorghe Alexianu,
you will learn how ordinary Romanians, even well educated and well
meaning,
mostly did nothing to fight the Anti-Semitic measures of Antonescu,
actually took advantage of them in order to enrich themselves.
Greed was probably a greater motive than hate.
