Hi Gitit,

The Austrian Gregorgasse was first renamed by the Romanians into Strada Gregor, then into Strada Nicolae Iorga, the present Ukrainian name is Сковороди  (Skovorody)
The Austrian Tomasczukgasse was renamed by Romanians into Strada Tomasciuc, the present Ukrainian name is also Сковороди (Skovorody).
I suppose that the present  Сковороди  street is a combination of two former streets, which may have been abbreviated in your papers as "Iorgu Toma" (Nicolae Iorga and Tomasciuc).

Where did you find Pictor Knapp?
This name is mentioned in two postings of our members.

Iosif Vaisman once mentioned he found "Кнапп" (Knapp) on an old Soviet master plan from 1944. It is a dead end and in present day maps there is no such dead end in the area where it is placed (to the south/southwest from the present university).

Lucca said once, that Pictor Knapp was a short dead end street which led to the left off the Neuweltgasse, but couldn't find it when he visited Czernowitz. On present day maps there is no such dead end street from the Шевченка (Shevchenka) street either.

regards,
Alex
