You forgot to mention the urge to be more "Local" than the locals.During the first census, when I was a child my parents used to make fun of people who barely spoke Russian, but put their mother tong as Russian. On the other hand, assimilation is the price of living in Diaspora and there are plenty of "not so proud" Jews all over the world.

I am sure that with all those latkes it's definitely a Czernowitzer holiday.
