Among the photographs of myself, taken in Czernowitz,
there is one, I knew was taken during the Russian period,
before the war. I knew that the photograph had been taken
by the Russian NKVD officer who was lodged with my family,
during that period.
But only today, I happened to look at the back of this photograph
And for the first time paid attention to the inscription.
It says:
1941 Sept 22
Sg. Joan Ecolicif
Could it be that a Russian officer was still in Czernowitz in Sept. 1941?
My parents always assumed that he was employed as a spy.
He spoke many languages fluently, often disappeared for days on end
And when he returned, usually brought me candies and sweets
manufactured outside the soviet union.
He protected my family, who were considered "Burjui factory owners"
from being deported to Siberia.
I am fairly sure that when the Germans bombed the airport of Czernowitz
in June 1941, he was not in town, could he secretly have come back and
stayed till Sept 22 or later?
