Charlotte,

According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the only place
tattooing occurred was at the Auschwitz camps, and while most prisoners were
tattooed on the forearm, "prisoners from several transports in 1943 had
their numbers tattooed on the inner side of their upper left forearms." So
your mother must have arrived at Auschwitz Main Camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, or
Auschwitz III (Monowitz and subcamps) in 1943.

You can read the whole article at
http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10007056 . There is some
information about the numbering systems used and related details.

Subject: [Cz-L] concentration camp tattoo

Hi,
I have a question again. My mother was in an concentration camp around
Auschwitz. I don`t know the exact camp name. When I was a little girl I saw
a tattoo at her upper arm inside. It was a number with about 6 or 7 digits,
about 5mm high and 5cm in length. During my investigation I could not find
any description about that numbering type. All other persons tattoos are on
the lower arm outside in big numbers and sometimes with a letter prefix.
Does someone knows that type of numbering, the meaning, or the location
where this tattoo was made.

Charlotte
