Hi Everyone,

With the upcoming convention, I was hoping to enlist some help, as I will not be able to attend. I am a member of the CZ-Ephes list. My family are/were the Rubels from Cz and possibly France. I have a belief that Maximilien Rubel, a very famous Marxist scholar was in fact one of my cousins. Let me give you some background, I apologize it is a bit lengthy:

It seems our great greats Chaim Mordechai and Rachel Rubel for some reason got married after their children were born according to films of the records from Czernowitz! I was looking at the film that contained Josef Rubel's marriage record (my great grandfather) and there it was! Dec 16, 1881 they were married. The record shows both of their parents and all of their children with their birth dates. It also confirms that Chaim  went by Marcus Rubel too. His father's name appears to be Hensel Rubel and his mother Hinde Singer both born in Cz. Rachel's parents look like, Hersch Kinsbrunner and Sara Jutte (w/ umlaut) Pelz also both from Cz. From this list I have traced 7 of the children to the present and I am looking for the rest.
The kids names are hard to make out in the scans but they are:
Daughter- Sossie b. 1851 married a Kinsbrunner, we are in contact with the family.
Daughter- Sprinre or Sprinze b. 1854
Daughter- Chuwe Libe b. 1857 married ELIAS FLEISCHER, not in contact.
Daughter- Lea b. 1859 married CHANINE KLEIN, not in contact.
Daughter- Bente Henie aka Bertha b. 1864 married Parker (Packer) we are in contact with the family.
Son- Meier b. 1865
Son- Jossel Isak b. 1867 my great grandfather-lots of cousins he had 10 kids!
Son- Schaje Bendel aka Bernhard  b. 1869 we are in contact with the family.
Son- Feibisch (this is Philipp, Erika's father) b. 1871 we only know of Erika no other sibs and we are in contact with the family.
Son- Joel Wolf b. 1873 we believe he changed his name to William, aka Wilhelm and we think we have found the family here and have some contact.
Son- Ahron Moses b. C878 changed his name to Max and lived in the US had one daughter who died as a teen. His line is gone.
I also have a David Ner b. 1876 d. 7/1877

So it appears Josef (my great grandfather) had 11 brothers and sisters!!! So now the reason for my email:
We recently found a clipping published in the Jewish Chronicle of London.  This article cites a Rebeka Rubel Gunzer of Israel in 1978 seeking info on her Aunt, "Erika daughter of Philipp Rubel, who left Vienna in 1939." We have found Erika (deceased) here in the US and her family, son and grandchildren. They are our cousins!! We are now trying to find Rebekka!
They only way Erika would have a niece would be if she had siblings. But......... we know of none.

We only know of a single child, Erika, that Philipp and Sabine Rubel, her parents had.  My belief is that Philipp was married twice.  First clue, Erika's emigration application lists a William Schmucker as her uncle.  Digging a bit, I found a marriage record for an Ester Rosa Schmucker and Feiwisch Rubel in Vienna (1903).  More research revealed that Ester parents (Moriz and Anna) died at the same location as Philipp, 1090 Porzellangasse 60 in Vienna.  Too much of coincidence.  It looks like they had children before she died in 1920.  I believe one of them was Rebeka.

According to more research, we think Rebeka was married to Bernard Gunzer (1900-1986). Based on the marriage date of 1903 and additional information that Rebeka's brother may be Maxilmilien Rubel, the Marxist author (1905-1996), I am surmising she was born in about 1904.  I do not know if she is still alive. There is a compilation entitled "The Archives of Maximilien Rubel."  In it there is a mention of a Jakob Rubel, (1911-1973) which could be a third sibling.

I found that there exists a whole catalogue of family correspondence and photos for Maximilien and his family.

This from the documents in the BDIC in France. See http://www.bdic.fr/

Thank you for taking the time to read this!!!
