Regarding  Gaby's line: "My mother sent me with some food for the Flüchtlinge. They refused my offering because I was Jewish."

This reminds me of the fall of 1939 by which time we were settled in Canada and when Hitler attacked Poland - a friend of ours said, "Good.  Let them kill each other."
