I owe Hardy an explanation since I benefit so much from the discussions. My
grandfather Chaim David Sattinger left Davideni and came to the U.S. in
1899. Having an immigrant grandparent was commonplace, and there seemed to
be an attitude that anything that happened before people got to America was
no longer relevant (of course depending on when they came). So the
grandchildren knew very little about the family he came from and the life he
led in Davideni. I regret not asking simple questions about his life when he
was alive. I subscribe to the listserv to learn more about Czernowitz and
the area, and perhaps to pick up leads on the family. I have been able to
share material, including Ruth Glasberg Gold's "Ruth's Journey," with family
members. Listserv members have been very helpful in providing information,
and I am very grateful. Michael Sattinger
