Dear Sally,
Thank you for your kind words. I was very moved by your message, and have read them several times.
Making this documentary has been a wonderful education for me. I had already learned a great deal from the listserv alone, but speaking to - and even meeting - fellow contributors has brought it all to life; it has also allowed me to share some of my Cz-L experiences with my children.
My grandmother, Regina Picker, was born in Czernowitz in 1902. She left for Vienna in 1919, I believe, and for Palestine in 1920. My father was born in Cairo in 1934. Regina did try to visit her hometown once, but was unable to gain entry to the Ukraine.
Last spring, I had the honour of meeting a certain Jerome Schatten of Vancouver, BC. After two years of cosmopolitan surprises in my inbox, I was really delighted to get in my car and drive down into town to meet him - with my two little boys (Benjamin, now almost five and Joel, now 15 months).
I also had the privilege of meeting Eva and Frederick Andermann. Another lucky coincidence: they were in Vancouver for a conference. We connected via email just in time, and again, I took my children along. Benjamin had a wonderful time playing and telling stories with Eva; this memory is as precious to me as the audio I gathered that day.
There were many other phone calls and emails, as you will hear from the finished piece. I have just learned that the broadcast date has been changed to April 13 (Friday!), but will send out a reminder nearer to that date. An audio file may also be available, which I hope to share on Ehpes. The documentary is over 20 minutes long, though, so it will be quite a large file.
The documentary may be an exploration of an individual's identity, but it is also a nod, a bow, a cheer and a heartfelt expression of my appreciation to the members of this list.
Again, my warmest wishes to you, Sally, and to the assembled company, both lurking and vocal.
L'chaim!

> Notwithstanding our generation gap, I feel completely identified with everything you tell us in your March 2011 article. Even though my mother experienced Czernowitz, she came to Chile in 1947, married an Argentinian who had come to Chile when he was 13 and her children, myself included, were not so interested in listening to her stories from such a distant past and territory. How I regret having been so blind and deaf in my youth! And it is necessary to admit that my mother did not like talking about her misfortunes. She had a sort of script, not very precise in chronological or even logical terms, that she almost recited sometimes.

Loosely based on the article I had published last year (http://www.jewishindependent.ca/Archives/mar11/archives11mar04-10.html), it features the voices of several list members. The orientation of the piece has changed a little, to match the theme of the show: "Who do you think you are?"

The stories I read and heard, and the people I encountered, have given me an entirely new perspective on our history in Europe, and on the education I hope to give my own children (our boys are now 4 and 1).
