Dear Shula,
I want to thank you for what you are doing to show your relationship with
Czernowitz. I am probably a generation older than you and my own mother was
a survivor of the Transnistria camps. (Unfortunately, my grandmother didn't
make it and perished from typhus somewhere along the road to nowhere).
Notwithstanding our generation gap, I feel completely identified with
everything you tell us in your March 2011 article. Even though my mother
experienced Czernowitz, she came to Chile in 1947, married an Argentinian
who had come to Chile when he was 13 and her children, myself included, were
not so interested in listening to her stories from such a distant past and
territory. How I regret having been so blind and deaf in my youth! And it is
necessary to admit that my mother did not like talking about her
misfortunes. She had a sort of script, not very precise in chronological or
even logical terms, that she almost recited sometimes.
The questions about your upbringing were the exact questions I used to ask
myself. The holes of your family stories are my own holes. And so are the
values and particular stresses on etiquette, the value of education, and in
fact, all what you describe in your article!
So, sister, or should I say niece? you represent my voice. And I have no
doubt that you also represent the voice of so many people who are scattered
around the globe.
Thank you again, Shula, and thanks to this incredible L-Cz network and the
wonderful people who compose it.

With deep emotion,

Sally Bendersky

Subject: [Cz-L] CBC Radio Documentary: on the air!

Dear all,

A documentary about my relationship with Czernowitz will be aired on
national CBC Radio One, on March 30 (1:00pm, Living Out Loud). Loosely based
on the article I had published last year
(http://www.jewishindependent.ca/Archives/mar11/archives11mar04-10.html), it
features the voices of several list members. The orientation of the piece
has changed a little, to match the theme of the show: "Who do you think you
are?"

I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this project, and wish I
could have used every second of the tape I gathered. The stories I read and
heard, and the people I encountered, have given me an entirely new
perspective on our history in Europe, and on the education I hope to give my
own children (our boys are now 4 and 1).

So I invite you to listen, humbly and a little nervously, to my longest
radio projext to date, and hope that it strikes the right kind of chord. I
am privileged to enjoy the company of extraordinary people here. The Cz-list
is a terrific place to learn the real meaning of "Mensch."

Kind regards,

Shula Klinger
