Dear Wanda,

I have a cousin, who lives not far from you in San Pedro - Sylvia FESSLER-SALGUERO.  She was born in 1946 in Ramnicu Valcea, Romania because the Romanian government had relocated her Dorna Vatra family there.  So, while not exactly someone with ties to Czernowitz she certainly knows suffering at the hands of the communists.

Her father had hanged himself in 1958 when he was in his darkest moments.  As he was a Jew and a dentist by profession, the government wouldn't allow him to have a practice and support his family.  She, her mother & younger sister basically supported themselves as rag pickers.  They received permission to leave for Israel in 1965 with just the clothes on their backs.  All their [minimal] jewelry was confiscated at the point of emigration as belonging to the state, etc.  Her stories are much like yours.  The pain is palpable when she talks about her youth there.

We should all be concerned that the basest elements of humanity still exist in Romania.
Shellie

Mea culpa! I did not read the text. I just reacted to the fact that Romania is doing anything to investigate the TRUTH about the deportation of Jews to Transnistria.

I am Romanian and I came to the US in 1965. I lived there under communism. Not a picnic!I read Romanian newspapers and I understand the trend. OF COURSE there are people like Liviu Carare who will tell the truth....
