This evening, I had the privilege to attend a Yom Hashoah program with my parents at the Riverdale Jewish Center in New York. The guest speaker was the acclaimed violinist and Maestro, Samuel Marder. He told his sad story of growing up in Czernowitz up until when he was deported to Transistria. He also spoke of the great help Eliezer Zusia Portugal, the Skulener <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skulen_(Hasidic_dynasty)> Rebbe <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebbe> , was in helping countless Jewish orphans after the war and encouraging him to resume violin studies after his liberation and return to Czernowitz. He told of how the theft of his violin en route to Transitria by a peasant, and subsequently the theft of the primitive one which the Skulner Rebbe helped him obtain, by a crossing guard as he was escaping Czernowitz, in real, as well as allegorical terms. Besides learning of this prominent Czernowitz survivor's story, I also found out my mother's brother, Leopold End, of blessed memory who died in Bershad had studied Cello at the same conservatory in Czernowitz before the war.

May all the memories, souls, and spirits of those who perished in the Shoah, be they family, neighbors, friends, or strangers live on in ways to make this a better world for all. We should never let the world forget...or else it will be repeated.
